Troubleshooting Your Heat Pump

If your heat pump isn’t performing as it should, try these tips to get it running smoothly again:

No Heat

Make sure your thermostat is set to ON and HEAT. The issue could also be a tripped breaker or a malfunctioning thermostat.

Not Enough Heat

Poor airflow—often caused by dirty filters, fans, or coils—is a common culprit. Replace air filters monthly and clean coils and fans regularly. Blocked ducts, faulty valves, or low refrigerant levels could also be to blame.

Blowing Cold Air

Heat pumps don’t produce air as hot as a furnace, but if it feels unusually cold, switch to emergency heat and raise the thermostat by at least 5°C. If that doesn’t help, the outdoor unit or thermostat may be faulty.

Frequent Cycling

First, replace the air filter. If the problem persists, check the thermostat’s calibration or replace its batteries. Keep in mind that some heat pumps struggle in extreme cold (below -25°C).

Strange Noises

Rattling may just mean loose cover panels or screws. Check and tighten them if needed. But scraping, grinding, or squealing noises could signal serious issues. Continuing to run your heat pump under these conditions can cause further damage and lead to costly repairs. For your safety and to protect your system, shut off the unit immediately and contact Able Air.
