Preparing Your Air Conditioner for the Winter Season: A Quick Guide

As summer draws to a close and cooler weather sets in, it’s time to start thinking about preparing your air conditioner for the winter season. Proper maintenance not only protects your AC unit but also ensures it’s ready to perform efficiently when the heat returns. Here’s a simple guide to help you winterize your air conditioner.

1. Clean or Replace the Air Filter

Start by cleaning or replacing the air filter. Over the summer, the filter can become clogged with dust and debris, which affects the unit’s efficiency. A clean filter improves airflow and reduces the strain on your air conditioner. If you have reusable filters, wash and dry them thoroughly before reinstalling.

2. Clear the Area Around the Outdoor Unit

Your outdoor unit likely gathered leaves, dirt, and debris over the summer. Clear away any twigs, leaves, and grass to ensure proper airflow around the unit. Trim any plants or bushes that have grown too close. This not only improves the unit’s efficiency but also helps to prevent potential damage from falling branches or ice in the winter months.

3. Inspect and Clean the Coils

Inspect the evaporator and condenser coils for dirt and debris. When these coils are dirty, your air conditioner has to work harder to cool your home, which can lead to higher energy bills. Use a soft brush or vacuum with a brush attachment to clean the coils. If you notice significant buildup or damage, consider scheduling a professional maintenance check.

4. Check for Damage

Examine your air conditioner, including the electrical wiring and components, for any signs of damage. Look for cracks, leaks, or loose parts that might need fixing. If you notice anything unusual, it’s best to call a professional technician to address the problem before winter sets in.

5. Shut Off the Power Supply

Turning off the power supply to your air conditioner is crucial for winter preparation. Most outdoor units have a power switch located in a box mounted on the side of your home. Shutting off the power prevents the unit from turning on during an unseasonably warm winter day, which could lead to water collecting in the unit and freezing.

6. Protect the Outdoor Unit

Instead of using a winter cover, you can place a piece of plywood over the top of your outdoor unit to shield it from falling ice and debris. Secure the plywood with bricks or heavy stones. This method provides some protection while allowing proper airflow to prevent moisture from being trapped inside, which can cause rust or damage.

7. Schedule Professional Maintenance

The best way to ensure your air conditioner is ready for winter is to schedule a professional maintenance check. A qualified technician will inspect the entire system, clean essential components, and address any potential issues. Regular maintenance extends the lifespan of your air conditioner and keeps it running efficiently year-round.

Why Is Winter Prep Important?

Taking the time to prepare your air conditioner for winter not only protects it from the elements but also sets you up for smooth operation in the warmer months. This simple maintenance can prevent unexpected breakdowns, reduce energy costs, and prolong the life of your unit.

Within a week of discovering that my A/C was leaking fluid, Able Air had replaced coils and installed my new unit. Mike came to discuss repairs versus replacement. The reason that so many people have given Able Air a 5 star rating was underscored for me when Mike said, "in good conscience I can't charge for servicing a unit that will be replaced." Crediting a service call on my old A/C might be minor compared to replacement costs, but sometimes small things go a long way to instill confidence in the varsity of a company and its owner. So also can those a company employs and Able Air has chosen it's staff well. The service tech, André, and the installation team of Martin and Steve were knowledgable, efficient, timely and personable. The office staff kept me well appraised of appointment times and payment options were seamless. The cost of the new unit was comparable if not better than the competition. I would, with confidence, recommend Able Air for your next furnace, A/C or servicing requirements.

Oct 1/26 Great yearly service of my Furnace and AC unit by Phil the tech. Very professional and respectful of my property. Feb 11/26 5*...Andre (with the beautiful eyes) came today to give me a peace of mind about the furnace room and it's temperature. He checked both the furnace from the inside and the combustion system from the outside to ensure that they were all in working order. Oct 28/25 5* AC/Furnace/Gas FP checkup by Josh. Excellent service provided. Josh was very thorough and professional in checking all 3 of my products. Oct/21 5* After getting 3 other quotes, I met Cyrus the owner. He was very professional and down to earth to answer questions honestly. He stood behind his word and his workmanship. He came to our home twice to ensure that we were 💯% confident in our decision for both AC and furnace installation. He arranged for the duct cleaning at a lower cost to ensure everything was clean before new equipment install. The crew (Waheed,Frank, Winston) came on time and were very professional and polite. They ensured that no dirt was dragged in from the outside by protecting our carpets. They protected our safety and wore masks and kept their distance during their install. I highly recommend this local company.

Sean (Shaun?) and Jim installed a new furnace and air conditioner for us today. We couldn't be more satisfied. The price was far better and more trustworthy than its competitor. The installation was very efficient and Sean and Jim left the basement cleaner than they found it! Sean also explained the differences between the new furnace and the old. I would definitey use Able again.

Early this summer our 26 yr old AC, Air Exchange and furnace began to fail and we decided to replace the entire system. We secured quotes from 4 name brands. Able Air was by far the most responsive offering sound technical explanations, a superior warranty and a competitive price. We selected the Amana heat pump paired with a modulating furnace, air exchange unit, high efficiency air filter all controlled by the Amana Smart Thermostat. Removal of the old system and installation of the new equipment by ABLE techs Martin and Steve went very well. After our first 6 weeks of operation we are very pleased with our new system, the ease of operation, and ability to control remotely. We have also subscribed to ABLE's annual maintenance plan.
