What if My AC Keeps Tripping the Circuit Breaker?

As summer temperatures rise, your air conditioning unit becomes essential for keeping your home cool and comfortable. However, if your AC keeps tripping the circuit breaker, it can be frustrating and concerning. Understanding why this happens and how to address it is crucial to maintaining your AC system’s efficiency and your home’s safety. At Able Air Conditioning & Heating, we want to help you understand the possible causes and solutions to this common issue.

Why Is Your AC Tripping the Circuit Breaker?

When your AC trips the circuit breaker, it’s a sign that the system is drawing more electrical current than the breaker can handle. Several factors can cause this:

  1. Dirty Air Filter
    • Impact: A clogged air filter restricts airflow, causing the AC to work harder and draw more power.
    • Solution: Regularly check and replace your air filter every 1-3 months, depending on usage and manufacturer recommendations.
  2. Dirty Condenser Coils
    • Impact: Condenser coils, located in the outdoor unit, dissipate heat from your home. If they are dirty, the AC has to work harder, increasing power consumption.
    • Solution: Clean the condenser coils at least once a year. If you’re unsure how to do this, professional maintenance is recommended.
  3. Low Refrigerant Levels
    • Impact: Low refrigerant levels cause the AC to overheat and work inefficiently, leading to higher power consumption.
    • Solution: Have a professional check the refrigerant levels and recharge the system if necessary. A leak should be repaired to prevent further issues.
  4. Faulty Capacitor
    • Impact: The capacitor provides the initial surge of power to start the AC’s motor. If it’s faulty, the motor might struggle to start, drawing excessive power.
    • Solution: A professional HVAC technician can test and replace the capacitor if needed.
  5. Short Circuit or Grounded Wire
    • Impact: Electrical issues like short circuits or grounded wires can cause excessive current flow, tripping the breaker.
    • Solution: These issues should be diagnosed and repaired by a licensed electrician to ensure safety and prevent further damage.
  6. Overloaded Circuit
    • Impact: If your AC shares a circuit with other high-power appliances, it can overload the circuit.
    • Solution: Ensure the AC has a dedicated circuit. If not, consult an electrician to install one.
  7. Malfunctioning Compressor
    • Impact: The compressor is a critical component of the AC. If it’s failing, it can draw excessive power.
    • Solution: Compressor issues often require professional attention. Repairing or replacing the compressor might be necessary.
  8. Aging or Undersized AC Unit
    • Impact: Older or undersized units may struggle to cool your home efficiently, leading to increased power consumption and tripping breakers.
    • Solution: Consider upgrading to a newer, properly sized unit. Professional HVAC contractors can assess your home’s cooling needs and recommend the right unit.

What to Do If Your AC Keeps Tripping the Circuit Breaker

Here are some steps to take if you encounter this issue:

  1. Turn Off the AC Unit
    • If the breaker trips, turn off the AC unit immediately to prevent damage. Locate the thermostat and switch it to the “Off” position.
  2. Reset the Circuit Breaker
    • Find your home’s electrical panel and reset the tripped breaker. If it trips again, don’t keep resetting it, as this can indicate a more serious problem.
  3. Inspect the Air Filter and Condenser Coils
    • Check if the air filter is dirty and replace it if necessary. Inspect the condenser coils and clean them if you see dirt or debris buildup.
  4. Check for Other Appliances on the Same Circuit
    • Ensure the AC is not sharing a circuit with other high-power appliances. If it is, relocate those appliances to different circuits.
  5. Call a Professional HVAC Technician
    • If basic troubleshooting doesn’t resolve the issue, it’s time to call a professional. An experienced technician can diagnose and repair more complex problems, ensuring your AC runs smoothly and safely.

Preventative Maintenance Tips

Preventative maintenance is key to avoiding circuit breaker trips and ensuring your AC operates efficiently. Here are some tips:

  1. Regular Maintenance: Schedule annual HVAC maintenance with a professional. They will inspect, clean, and service your system to keep it in top condition.
  2. Replace Air Filters: Change air filters regularly to maintain proper airflow and efficiency.
  3. Clean Condenser Coils: Keep the outdoor unit free from debris and clean the coils as needed.
  4. Monitor Refrigerant Levels: Have a professional check refrigerant levels annually and address any leaks immediately.
  5. Upgrade When Necessary: If your AC unit is old or undersized, consider upgrading to a more efficient model that meets your cooling needs.

An air conditioning unit that keeps tripping the circuit breaker can be a symptom of various issues, from simple maintenance needs to more serious electrical problems. By understanding the potential causes and taking appropriate action, you can ensure your AC operates efficiently and safely. At last, a company whose slogan is not an elaborate work of fiction. Our furnace's condensate pump had given up the ghost, presumably deciding that employment in the Canadian winter was no longer worth the effort. Phil arrived promptly, was courteous and knowledgeable, and fixed the problem with impressive efficiency. No theatrical sighing, no mysterious technical jargon designed to frighten the homeowner into bankruptcy, and no invoice comparible with the national debt of the United States of America. Better still, Phil inspected the entire HVAC setup, measured the emissions, and offered sensible recommendations without attempting to sell me half the contents of a hardware store. Refreshingly honest, thoroughly professional, and blessedly free of bull. One suspects the moose on the logo personally vets the staff. Even Baldrick could probably understand this level of service, although I wouldn't trust him to measure emissions without accidentally testing the exhaust from his own trousers. Five stars. Phil knows his business, ABLE delivers on its promise, and the only bull in sight is the sort that gets trampled by a moose. Highly recommended!

Able Air did a great job in getting my Lennox HX warranty approved, get the part delivered quickly and do the replacement of HX and the testing very quickly. I should say all within a week. Chris from their team was great at explanation and processing the warranty whereas Phil the HVAC tech who came to do the actual job also did a great job and explained me everything. Our HX is all new and the system just got its life extended rather than swapping to a new furnace. Definitely great team and was great to work with :)

This is the best company to work with, from a simple service call after hours to discovering I needed a new furnace, to having a consultation about all the products that would work and why they are the best for my house, to setting up and asking questions to the wonderful ladies in the office, to a clean and friendly install, Able Air and Heating is the place to go!! Shawn and Jamie did an amazing job installing and showing me everything and helped to set up my new thermostat as well. I couldn’t be more happier with spending my money here, especially to a local company!!! Thank you all!!!!
